The James Cook University Experience: Learning beyond the classroom

At the Singapore campus of James Cook University, education is so much more than just lectures and textbooks. The university believes in enriching student life beyond the classroom, so that students can be well-prepared for life and work beyond university – all while having a good time.
Student life is designed to be enriching, empowering and engaging. James Cook University blends academic excellence with personal development, industry exposure, and community connection, so that its students are equipped not just to succeed – but to thrive in a world of constant change.
From wellness resources to mentorship initiatives, industry engagement and student clubs – the James Cook University experience promises students a well-rounded learning experience, where they can not only receive world-class education, but also sharpen their skills, broaden perspectives, and build confidence to take on future challenges.
Read on to learn more about how the university supports its students outside of the classroom, and also beyond their time in university.
Supporting mental wellbeing

At the heart of James Cook University’s approach to student life is a commitment to mental wellness. The Counselling Office on campus offers support to students navigating academic pressures, personal challenges, or simply needing someone to talk to. One of its key initiatives is the Wellness Buddies initiative – a peer support programme where students are trained to offer emotional support to peers in the University. The program reflects the team’s observations that students in distress typically prefer to talk to their peers first, compared to approaching professionals – for possible reasons as being better able to connect with people of similar backgrounds such as age, country of origin and culture.
Real-World Industry Exposure

The university is also always working on providing students with industry immersion opportunities. Students have access to a wide range of platforms where they get to engage with professionals, gain industry insights, and apply their learning to real-world contexts. Below are some highlights:
- Design Sprint Challenge: The Design Sprint, as its name suggests, is a fast-paced, hands-on problem-solving method widely used in product design, UX/UI, and business strategy. The Challenge is a two-day event held every trimester, as part of the University’s Design Thinking classes. It sees students from Business Information Technology and Cybersecurity programs coming together to solve real-world problems under the guidance of industry mentors.
- Convergence Conference: This event encourages students and faculty to exchange ideas with industry leaders and researchers on global business issues.
- CEO Lounge: Business students get to pitch business solutions to industry guests, including prominent CEOs in Singapore, and receive advice and inspiration from them.
- Applied Psychology Conference: A platform for Psychology students to present research, hear from field experts, connect with practitioners and more.
- Industry Visits and MOUs: From office visits to formal collaborations with industry partners, students get a feel of variety of work environments, and secure networking opportunities that broaden their career outlook.
Learning from real-world industry mentors
The university’s Mentorship Matters programme connects student mentees (final year undergraduate students and all postgraduate students) with industry professionals, who guide them in professional and personal development. Students enrolled in the programme receive at least 10 hours of mentorship sessions, and have access to employability activities, workshops, networking sessions and more.
