Inside the Canadian International School experience

For Student Council President Deepanwita A, thriving at school means balancing academics, activities, and everyday challenges to discover who she truly is. She perfectly embodies the CIS experience – combining academic rigour with extracurricular passions while maintaining meaningful connections with friends and teachers.

Her day typically begins before most of the school wakes up, with early-morning training alongside the Husky Swim Team. “I love starting my day being active and watching the sunrise over our campus!” she says.

On the IB Diploma Programme, the day starts with an Advisory session – a dedicated time for students to check in, set goals, reflect, and receive guidance from their personal academic mentor before moving on to subject classes. Each day also includes a 40-minute SMART period, allowing students to stay organised, focus on key study areas, or explore personal interests and passions.

Since joining CIS in 2021, Deepanwita has discovered a love for Economics and the way decisions, people, and systems interact. She says, “Economics pushes me to think critically and connect classroom learning to real-world situations.”

This curiosity has shaped her ambition to study Economics in the UK with the hope of eventually working at global institutions like World Bank or International Monetary Fund (IMF).

PERSONAl PROJECTS

Beyond the classroom, CIS offers a wealth of service and leadership opportunities. Deepanwita leads the Student Council, competes with the Husky Swim Team, mentors younger students on their personal projects, and takes part in service initiatives. One highlight was travelling to Nepal with classmates to build a biogas chamber for a local village – a hands-on project that allowed students to apply their learning while making a tangible difference.

For Deepanwita, CIS is a place that encourages intrigue, nurtures community, and instils the confidence to take on challenges. In her words: “CIS has given me the tools to make a difference in the world while discovering who I am along the way.”
