Competition mode on for ANZA Nippers!

Every Nippers season has its big finish. After months of sandy feet, boards being hauled across the beach by parent volunteers, and kids charging through the shallows in the blue and yellow, it all builds to one final flourish: Competition Sunday, followed by the much-loved games day packed with serious skills, healthy rivalry, plenty of laughs and a community spirit that makes this programme a standout on the ANZA calendar in Singapore.

The competition gives ANZA Nippers across every age group the chance to put their training into action. For families new to the programme, it’s also the perfect reminder that what can sometimes look like organised chaos on Siloso Beach is actually something much bigger. Beneath the games, relays and splashing around is a carefully built foundation of surf awareness, water confidence, beach fitness and lifesaving skills.

Every type of beach kid

The younger age groups tackled events including Wades, Swim, Sprint, Flags and Boards, while the older ANZA Nippers also took on combo events like the Run-Swim-Run and the always-iconic Ironperson. And true to form, there was something for every type of beach kid. Some thrived in the split-second drama of Flags, where reactions were everything. Others came alive in the Sprint, head down and flying over the sand. Then there were the water-loving Nippers who seemed to grow taller the second they jumped on a board, or those who secretly dug deep in a swim.

For the older kids, Run-Swim-Run and Ironperson (which combined the run, swim and boards) brought everything together: fitness, stamina, transitions and the ability to stay calm moving between sand and sea and different equipment.

“This day gives Nippers across every age group the chance to put their training into action”

Antipodean spirit

In Singapore’s flatter, friendlier conditions, it can be easy to forget just how many layered skills are being developed every Sunday morning down on Sentosa. Competition Sunday made it crystal clear: these kids are not just playing at the beach. They’re learning confidence, resilience and how to trust themselves in open water.

There were medal presentations and games for kids and parents. The breakfast burritos, generously sponsored by Guzman y Gomez, were a well-earned reward. It was chilled, cheerful and made Nippers feel like much more than a kids’ sports programme.

At ANZA Nippers in Singapore, we swap big Aussie surf for flat water, long patrol beaches for Sentosa, and sausage sizzles for burritos and pool hangs. But the Antipodean spirit remains the same: a volunteer-led community helping kids grow stronger, braver and happier in and around the sea. Nippers is back for another season now outside Ola Beach Club on Siloso Beach. We hope to see you there!
