Why ANZA Scouts is so special

Scouts Australia – with around 70,000 members nationwide – is one of the country’s largest youth development organisations. It’s a movement with scale, structure and staying power, and its reach goes way beyond Oz, with ANZA Scouts launching in Singapore in 1994 with 15 Scouts and five leaders.

But away from the ability to tie a great knot, what makes Scouts so special? At its core, Scouts focuses on experiential learning across four activity areas known as Challenge Areas: Community, Outdoors, Personal Development and Creativity. Activities are youth-led, meaning the Scouts themselves decide what they do and take an active role in running sessions. That ownership is intentional and develops evaluation and organisational skills while teaching young people to collaborate and take responsibility.

As they progress through the programme, Scouts gain autonomy in planning and delivering activities. The level of adult support gradually reduces, shifting towards mentoring and logistical guidance by the time members reach their late teens. Leadership isn’t just encouraged, it’s expected.

Each Scout brings individual enthusiasm, interests and challenges, and the programme is broad enough to accommodate them. Patrols are small, with a maximum of six members, ensuring every child has a voice in what the activity is and how it’s run. Peer review is built into the sessions, bringing with it reflection and continuous improvement.

Parents and guardians of children aged 11 – 15 years old at ANZA Scouts are often struck by how mature and engaged Scouts are. Confidence grows, and all the learning, resilience and teamwork translates into skills that stay with them throughout life. Turns out, tying knots is just the beginning.
