The Secrets of Holland Village
Did you know that Holland Village has absolutely nothing to do with the country of Holland? This lively, colourful neighbourhood was named in honour of an architect, Hughe Holland, one of the early residents of this estate. From a gambier and rubber plantation in the 1870s, to a bustling military village in the 1930s, Holland Village and Commonwealth have transformed into a trendy hotspot brimming with charming shops and buzzing nightlife.
Our walking tour will kick off at Chip Bee Gardens, once the coveted address for high-ranking British soldiers and a popular social hub. We’ll continue through the estate to discover the hidden gem of the Yin Fo Fui Kun Cemetery, tucked quietly in the middle of a residential estate surrounded by HDB blocks. Founded in 1887 by the Hakka clan, it remains Singapore’s last Hakka graveyard. Stroll along Lorong Mambong, where coffee houses, restaurants, and wine bars have flourished since the 1980s, adding to the area’s charm. Our tour wraps up at the hawker centre, where you’ll have the chance to savour local delights of your choice.
NOTES: Substantial walking/exertion required in the heat. Expect to be on your feet for most of this tour. Infrequent rest stops.
