Nurturing multilingual minds at Dulwich College (Singapore)
When it comes to raising globally fluent, culturally confident young people, language is more than communication – it is identity. That’s why Dulwich College (Singapore) is investing deeply in its First Language Programme, a dynamic pathway that celebrates cultural roots and linguistic diversity while preparing students to thrive on the world stage.
Launched in 2021 with just 29 students, the First Language Programme has more than doubled in size and now supports 67 students across Years 7 – 13. The initiative reflects the College’s belief that multilingualism is not only a strength but a cornerstone of a truly international education.
Global perspective
From Years 7 – 11, students can take First Language French and Japanese as part of their regular timetable. Lessons are delivered on campus by expert native-speaking tutors, blending linguistic precision with authentic cultural insight. Students explore literature, hone their writing, and develop the critical thinking that underpins academic excellence. Beyond fluency, the programme builds academic literacy, cultural intelligence, and global perspective – qualities that empower students across all their subjects. It also prepares them for advanced study within the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme, where First Language becomes an official IB Language A subject.

Recent graduates have studied Japanese, French, Spanish, Korean, and German, with many earning the prestigious IB Bilingual Diploma qualification, recognised by universities worldwide as a mark of academic excellence and global readiness.
Now in its fourth year, the First Language Programme is recognised for its personalised approach and cultural significance. Its continued growth highlights the College’s commitment to helping every student sustain, celebrate, and share their linguistic heritage.
At Dulwich College (Singapore), languages are far more than subjects – they’re bridges that connect cultures, families, and futures. By nurturing multilingual minds, the College is preparing its students to Live Worldwise, learning not only to speak across borders, but to lead across them too.
