From Vietnam to victory for ANZA Wombats

The ANZA Singapore Wombats and Wombettes are ruling 2026 so far! The past few months saw the club travelling to Vung Tau for the annual ANZAC Day Cup, taking on the Malaysia Warriors and the Vietnam Swans. They wasted no time making a statement to the rest of Asia.

Wombats v Malaysia Warriors Final Score: 119 – 6

The Wombats opened the tour with a statement. Slick ball movement cut through Malaysia’s defence from the first bounce, producing a scoreline that set the tone for the tournament.

Wombats v Vietnam Swans Final Score: 69 – 20

The home side made them work for it. Playing in front of a passionate local crowd, the Vietnam Swans pushed the Wombats to sharpen up – and they did, delivering a more clinical performance to secure their second victory of the tour.

Wombettes Join the All-Stars Final Score: 81 – 17

Without a full squad, the Wombettes joined forces with the Vietnam All-Star Team and showed everyone how footy should be played! A special thanks to the Vietnam Swans women’s players, who made the team feel at home throughout.

The ANZA Singapore Wombats and Wombettes retained the ANZAC Day Cup and left Vietnam with their reputation on the regional stage firmly intact.

Bill Niko’s Cup Comes Home

In May, the ANZA Singapore Wombats and Wombettes hosted the annual Bill Niko Memorial Cup – a day held in honour of former player Bill Nikolopoulos. Bill had a huge passion for both AFL and Gaelic Football, and each year the teams continue his legacy with an International Rules tournament against the Singapore Gaelic Lions.

One of the standout additions this year was the junior curtain-raiser between the AusKick Sharks and the Singapore Gaelic Lions Cubs. Sixty-four kids aged 7–14 took part in a mixed AFL and Gaelic Football match, with four games running simultaneously across the field. It was great to see both groups playing together, learning new skills and enjoying the spirit of the game. For over 12 years, the Singapore Gaelic Lions had held the title, but on this 20th anniversary of the Bill Niko Games, the Wombats and Wombettes brought the cup home.

The Wombettes were first up against the Singapore Gaelic Lions, and they delivered! Strong early goals set the tone, and they maintained control. The Lions, building a relatively new side, fought hard but struggled to convert. The Wombettes continued to capitalise with clinical finishing. Congrats, Wombettes.

On the men’s side, The Lions dominated, holding a commanding 58–37 lead heading into the final quarter, their long reign looking secure. But the Wombats had other ideas and an extraordinary final-quarter comeback sealed a two-point victory. Historic!
