Speaking at ANZA’s Pink Ribbon Morning Tea

Please take us back two decades!
As a new arrival from Australia in 2005, I attended an ANZA Casual Coffee morning after a nudge from my husband Peter’s work colleagues and a few friends. With work on pause, no kids, and Peter often travelling, I thought this ANZA thing might give me something to do, and some company while doing it. I had such a great time that the next morning I found myself at a mahjong session, and haven’t looked back!

You’ve been the driving force behind ANZA Mahjong and our Casual Coffee group for years. What keeps you motivated?
I remember moving to Hong Kong years ago with no welcome or network, so I know how lonely that can feel. I always wanted to be part of something that made newcomers to a country feel instantly included. That’s what first inspired me to get involved, and it still drives me today.

How would you describe the unique ANZA spirit’ that sets us apart?
I’ve always loved the can-do, jump-right-in energy of the staff and members. There are endless opportunities to explore and get involved in the community, and you can dip in as much or as little as you like. The choice of activities abound. Also, if ANZA doesn’t offer a particular sport or activity, you can go ahead and set it up with the support of the office team. You can build new friendships and be part of something greater than just one person.

“New members often tell us we’re the ‘fun group’ – and that’s something to celebrate!”

What makes you proud to be part of our community?
I love the open, warm welcome that’s at the heart of ANZA. New members often tell us we’re the ‘fun group’ – and I think that’s something to celebrate!

You’ve supported so many members. What has your membership given you in return?
I’ve made so many friends throughout my time here. Some are still here, others are scattered across the world. I’ve learned, laughed, grown in confidence, and been lucky enough to give a little back to the community along the way.

With our Casual Coffee group.

As Singapore changes, how do you hope the association grows?
As life evolves, it’s wonderful to see new members stepping up and getting involved, bringing fresh ideas and energy while keeping our core values – warmth, connection, and community – alive.

Please describe ANZA in three words …
Generosity of spirit. Along with the brilliant office team, ANZA runs on the passion of hundreds of volunteers who give their time and talent to create sports and social activities that bring people together. Whether we’re here for a short time or longer, ANZA can be your family away from home.
