Weather Policy
Sessions proceed unless we notify members otherwise. We use Team App as our communication tool and this is where members should check for updates. In the event of inclement weather, we check weather apps to see if lightning is forecast for the Sentosa area and make a decision at 8am if the session is to be cancelled. A notification is then sent out.
If lightning commences during a session, we adhere to the 30/30 rule – if there is less than 30 seconds between flash (lightning) to bang (thunder) then activity ceases for 30 minutes. Once a period of 30 minutes has passed without a less than 30 second duration between flash to bang, then the session can proceed. If parents do not wish to wait 30 minutes to see if activity will resume they are free to leave but they MUST notify the Age manager before leaving so we can sign participants out.
In the case of lightning or extreme weather:
- The decision to play will be made at 8am before the start of the session
- If lightning commences during a session, we adhere to the 30/30 rule – if there is less than 30 seconds between flash (lightning) to bang (thunder) then activity ceases for 30 minutes. Once a period of 30 minutes has passed without a less than 30 second duration between flash to bang, then the session can proceed.
- If the session is cancelled it will be communicated by WhatsApp.
- It is at parents own discretion is they wish to opt out of a session.
ANZA NIPPERS LIGHTNING POLICY
ANZA Nippers training is conducted at Ola Beach Club and aligns with its guidelines in relation to lightning.
Singapore has one of the highest global rates of lightning storms, and there are regular reports of fatalities resulting from such storms.
ANZA Nippers makes its weather decisions based on the Lightning Warning System provided by Ola.
If either the Lightning Warning System is activated OR the Lightning Alert Service indicates a lightning threat within an 8km radius, then outdoor activity must cease and Nippers must get out of the water immediately.
It is the policy that at the first signs of thunder and/or lightning, adults supervising outdoor activities MUST call students to order and remove them to a safe and protected (covered) place. They should remain in that safe and protected place until thirty minutes after the last sign of thunder and/or lightning.
** In Singapore, the Lightning Alert Service may be accessed online (http://www.weather.gov.sg/lightning/lightning/lightningalertinformationsystem.jsp) or through the mobile app “Lightning@SG”.
Parents responsibilities
- Parents are expected to check WhatsApp regularly, so they are aware of any cancellations or changes in venue for training.
- Parents are reminded that ANZA Nippers is NOT a drop off activity and if a session is cancelled, it is the responsibility of the parents to ensure that their children leave the beach in a timely manner with a responsible adult.
