FAQs

What is ANZA Nippers?

Nippers is a quintessential Australian and New Zealand beach activity for children and teens to have fun and learn surf awareness and safety at the beach. Since 2015, this not-for-profit, organisation offers kids aged between 5-13 a chance to participate in surf lifesaving activities in Singapore, and enjoy the beach in a safe, positive and encouraging environment.

When does the season start and finish?

ANZA Nippers runs two terms throughout the year from March – June and September – December.  There are a few breaks during the season to accommodate the different school holidays including a long summer break from July-August. Sometimes the school holidays do not align so there will be times when Nippers is on during respective school holidays.

2024 Season dates can be found on the ANZA Nippers registration page.

How much does ANZA Nippers cost?

The fees for the season can be found on the ANZA Nippers registration page.  All players are required to purchase a uniform. Uniform details can be found here.

How do I register?

In order to sign up for ANZA Nippers (and any other ANZA sporting programme), you must first be an ANZA member. ANZA is open to all nationalities, not just Australians and New Zealanders. Please register via the main ANZA website and ensure membership is kept current throughout the Nippers season.

What is your refund policy?

ANZA Nippers, like all other ANZA sports groups, does not issue refunds.  In special circumstances the ANZA Nippers Committee may agree to a refund if a child has a medical certificate to show that they cannot play for the rest of the term or if a family is relocating before the season commences. There are NO REFUNDS once the term has commenced or halfway through the term, under any circumstances.

How old do you have to be?

ANZA Nippers accepts players of all abilities and ages from 5 to 14 years. Players will be automatically placed in the age group according to their year of birth. The ANZA Committee will consider requests to keep friends together upon registration, but they cannot make any guarantees.

What level of player do you cater for?

Whilst we do accept beginners from 5 years old, the following is required for the safety of all in the water:

**Independent Swim Ability – At Nippers we do not teach children how to swim. It is expected that your children can swim independently and meet swim assessment criteria

**Parent Participation Required – This is not a drop off activity. Parents / Guardian must remain on the beach for the duration of the session and assist as required

It is expected that you register your children only if they can swim independently and meet swim assessment criteria. We will conduct swim assessments at our first session of the season for all participants to ensure that this is achievable. Members that join after the commencement of the season, and up to the start of Term 2, will undergo swim assessments separately. If the participant is unable to pass the swim assessment you may have to forfeit the season and we cannot guarantee that registration fees will be refunded to you. So please review this information carefully.

What is the coach to child ratio?

Singapore Nippers is a popular sport and space is limited. Each Age Group needs to have at least one Bronze Medallion qualified adult per every 5 children in the water for the safety of all involved. An Age manager supports the delivery of each age group alongside assisting parents. We encourage as many parents as possible to attain their Bronze Medallion so that we can extend the number of children per age group. We offer training for our BMs to become Age Managers and Assistants so please reach out with interest. Bronze Medallion Certification and proficiency is available each year through Singapore Nippers.

Is there any first aid at Nippers? What happens if my child gets injured?

Our Age Group Managers and Bronze Medallions are first aid qualified. A first aid kit is available on the beach for minor injuries. For major incidents we work directly with the Ola beach Life Guards.

How do I receive information about ANZA Nippers?

ANZA Nippers uses WhatsApp, email and StackTeam App to send out information to parents.  Please ensure you are on the WhatsApp groups for all AND your child’s age group so no important information is missed.

What is your weather policy?

The ANZA Nippers weather policy can be found here.

Can I drop my child off at Nippers?

ANZA Nippers is NOT a drop off activity. An adult must be present to supervise at all times. If you cannot be there to supervise your child, please ensure that you have nominated a responsible adult in your place. This is to ensure that someone is there to make decisions should an injury occur. ANZA Nippers cannot make decisions about your child’s health.

Please note ANZA Nippers’s insurance does not cover siblings. If you are bringing along siblings, please ensure you are supervising them appropriately. They should not be allowed to run around the Age Groups or participate in sessions.

How can I help?

Our programme is run by dedicated parent volunteers who offer their time and skills in a variety of roles, including coaching and assistant coaching, age group, uniform, IT or equipment coordinators, as well as Committee Members.

Our volunteer coaches are all encouraged and supported to attend Coaching and Umpiring Courses, which we run throughout the year. Interested in getting involved? A range of volunteer roles can be found here.
